Liverpool footballer Mohamed Salah has criticized UEFA for their tribute to the late Palestinian footballer Suleiman Al-Obeid, known as the "Palestinian Pelé." UEFA posted a brief message honoring Al-Obeid, calling did not specify how he passed away, but described him as "a talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times."
The Palestine Football Association (PFA) reports that Al-Obeid, 41, was killed Wednesday in southern Gaza after an Israeli strike targeted civilians who were waiting for humanitarian relief. Salah responded on social media by asking UEFA to provide an explanation of "how he died, where, and why."
Suleiman Al-Obeid was a celebrated player who scored over 100 goals during his career and played for the Palestinian national team. He was well-known for inspiring many, earning him the nickname “Palestinian Pelé.”
The PFA also reported that more than 400 sportspeople, including footballers, have been killed in Gaza since the conflict began in October 2023. Many sports facilities, including the PFA’s headquarters, have been damaged during the fighting.
Salah, who is known for supporting humanitarian causes, has previously called for aid to be allowed into Gaza amid the ongoing conflict. The war has caused severe destruction and hardship for many civilians in the region.
UEFA has not commented on Salah’s criticism.
