Congratulations to Sushila Karki for her appointment as interim prime minister of Nepal, receiving significant international backing from leaders from India, the United States, China, and Pakistan, with high levels of congrats and pledges of support for stability and peace, while enhancing bilateral relations.
Words of praise offered by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Karki a "woman's empowerment" representative and referred to Nepal as India's "close friend and trusted friend." The High Commission of India stated “we remain committed to continue our active cooperation and support to Nepal.”
The US Embassy in Kathmandu welcomed the appointment and then acknowledged the efforts of President Ramchandra Paudel and youth leaders in reaching an elected and democratic resolution of the recent turmoil in Nepal. The US Embassy acknowledged the role of the Nepali Army in making the political transition relatively smooth, and looks forward to working with the interim government until elections.
China offered congratulations highlighting that it respects Nepal's independent development path, and that it was ready to foster coordination and cooperation, and strengthen ties with Nepal under the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence.
Also, from the side of the Government of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister commented on behalf of his Government through the Pakistani Embassy congratulating Karki and expressing and eagerness to work to deepen relations, and hoping for peace and progress of the Nepali people.
Karki, Nepal’s first female prime minister and former chief justice, assumed office on Friday. Her interim government is tasked with holding general elections on March 5, 2026.
