Young people from Generation Z are preparing to stage a protest in Kathmandu on Monday against the government’s decision to block 26 social media platforms, including Facebook, for not being registered in Nepal.
The demonstration will begin at Maitighar Mandala at 11 a.m., with organizers urging participants to wear school uniforms and carry identity cards. The protest has taken off on TikTok, with trendings videos and trending hashtags.
In addition to standing against the social media ban, the protesters have called for an end to corruption, improved governance, and job creation within the country.
Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah (Balen) has expressed his support for the movement, though he said he cannot attend due to age restrictions. On Facebook, he called on political parties and leaders not to use the rally for personal gain.
Medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai also announced he will join the protest, calling it a major campaign against corruption. He urged the government not to repeat the heavy-handed measures seen during the March 28 demonstrations.
The protest is expected to draw large numbers, with gatherings planned at Maitighar Mandala, New Baneshwor, and outside the International Convention Centre near Parliament. The Rastriya Swatantra Party has also voiced support.
Authorities have said security arrangements are in place to keep the rally peaceful. The government has promised to maintain law and order as frustrations rise over corruption scandals involving major political parties.
