Ex-boxing world champion Julio César Chávez Jr. has been deported from the United States and placed in custody in Mexico.

The 39-year-old was arrested in Los Angeles last month by immigration agents for overstaying his visa and giving false information in his residency application. His arrest came only days after his fight against Jake Paul in California.

On arrival in Mexico, Chávez was taken to a federal prison in Hermosillo, Sonora. Authorities there accuse him of links to the Sinaloa cartel, including drug and weapons trafficking.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the deportation, noting that an arrest warrant had been issued years earlier.

Chávez Jr., son of legendary fighter Julio César Chávez Sr., had once been a world champion but his career has been overshadowed by failed drug tests and personal troubles. His legal team insists he has no cartel connections.
