Alex Abrines, the captain of FC Barcelona, declared his retirement from professional basketball at the age of thirty-one. The Mallorcan player, who joined Barça in 2012, played a total of 660 games for the club over two stints (2012–2016 and 2019–2025), winning 15 trophies.
Abrines' contract was originally scheduled to expire on June 30, 2026, but Abrines and Barça agreed to end it early. The club referred to the Palau Blaugrana as their "forever home" and thanked him for his commitment and services throughout the years.
In a farewell letter, Abrines said, “It’s time to live the life I want and spend more time with family and friends. Barça has given me everything.”
Abrines joined Barça from Unicaja at 18 and quickly rose to prominence. He won seven titles during his first stint, including the ACB League in 2014, the Spanish Cup in 2013, and the Super Cup in 2015. He also played in the NBA for the Oklahoma City Thunder from 2016 to 2019 before returning to Barça, where he added eight more titles.
In total, he played 339 ACB games, 267 EuroLeague games, and other domestic competitions. He also ranks third in all-time three-pointers for Barça in the ACB, shooting at 41.5%.
Internationally, Abrines won bronze medals with Spain in the 2016 Olympics and 2017 EuroBasket, along with youth-level medals.
His departure marks the end of a memorable chapter in Barça basketball history.
