KATHMANDU: A man named Surendra Yongya, aged 28 and residing in Phidim municipality-1, was apprehended by police after attempting to steal golden jewelry weighing 1 tola or approximately 11.7 grams during a failed robbery incident. Yongya was caught red-handed by police at the residence of Bishnu Kumari Tamang in Phidim municipality-2 on April 10 last month. Upon being alerted by the family members of Bishnu Kumari, who discovered Yongya attempting to steal from a steel cupboard containing the gold jewelry, the police promptly arrived at the scene and arrested him. At the time of arrest, Yongya was found in possession of Rs 15,000 in cash but did not have any stolen items in his possession.
Subsequently, it was discovered that a piece of jewelry weighing one tola of gold was missing from the household. Suspecting that Yongya might have ingested the stolen item, the family members alerted the police. An X-ray conducted at the District Hospital Phidim confirmed the presence of metal in Yongya's stomach. Approximately 36 hours after the ingestion, the missing golden jewelry was recovered from Yongya's feces, as confirmed by information officer Kushwaha.
Following thorough investigation into the theft, the District Police Office Panchthar filed a case against Yongya in the District Court Panchthar. The court granted bail to Yongya on May 5, setting the bail amount at Rs 150,000. However, as Yongya failed to deposit the bail amount, he was subsequently sent to the District Jail Panchthar.
