On day 9 of Paris Olympics: America leads the standings with 19 gold medals

KATHMANDU: On Day 9 of the Paris Olympics 2024, the golf competition saw Scottie Scheffler of the United States clinch gold with a remarkable nine-under-par 62, finishing at 19-under-par. He narrowly beat Britain's Tommy Fleetwood, who took silver, while Japan's Hideki Matsuyama secured the bronze. In archery, South Korea's Kim Woo-jin won gold in the individual men's event, defeating American Brady Ellison, who settled for silver. Lee Woo-seok of South Korea earned the bronze.


With Germany's Isabell Werth capturing silver and Britain's Charlotte Fry repeating her bronze from the Tokyo Olympics, Jessica von Bredow-Werndl successfully defended her Olympic crown in solo equestrian. Italian tennis players Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini created history by defeating Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider, who finished in second place, to earn their country's first-ever Olympic gold in women's doubles. By winning the men's singles championship match, Novak Djokovic also completed a career Grand Slam. Italian Lorenzo Musetti took home the bronze.


Cycling saw American Kristen Faulkner win the women’s road race gold, with Belgian Lotte Kopecky and Dutch Marianne Vos taking silver and bronze, respectively. In table tennis, China's Fan Zhendong defeated Sweden’s Truls Moregard for gold in the men’s singles, with 17-year-old French player Lebrun winning bronze. Gymnastics saw Liu Yang of China defend his title in the men’s rings, while Algeria’s Kaylia Nemour made history as the first African gymnast to win an Olympic medal with gold on the uneven bars.


In athletics, Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh won gold in the women’s high jump, and Canada’s Ethan Katzberg took gold in the men’s hammer throw. Noah Lyles of the U.S. won the men’s 100m final in a thrilling finish, with Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson and American Fred Kerley taking silver and bronze. In boxing, several athletes, including Hasanboy Marfjon Ugli Dusmatov and Bilal Benama, secured bronze in various weight categories.


Following a thrilling shoot-off, Francisca Crovetto Chadid of Chile won gold in the women's skeet at the shooting competitions. France took home the bronze in the fencing competition, while Japan earned its first Olympic men's foil team gold after defeating Italy. Highlights from the swimming events were the gold medal triumph by Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom in the women's 50-meter freestyle and the U.S. team breaking records in the men's and women's 4-by-100-meter medley relays, with China and Australia claiming silver and bronze, respectively.
