KATHMANDU: Prominent Nepali cricketer Sandeep Lamichhanewas found guilty of violating the Cricket Association of Nepal's (CAN) code of conduct and was given a one-match suspension. The suspension occurred while he was leading Bagmati Province in the Jay Trophy Elite Cup as captain.
Lamichhane publicly expressed his displeasure with what he called "wrong decisions" made by umpires on social media. The CAN code of conduct forbids players from openly contesting umpiring decisions, and this was found to be a violation.
Lamichhane was given three demerit points in accordance with the match referee's and technical committee's recommendations, according to CAN spokesperson Chhumbi Lama. He is therefore not permitted to play in a single match of any CAN-hosted competition.
Although Lamichhane did not address the suspension in his social media post, he did thank his followers. His problems have gotten worse as a result of his recent behavior and the disciplinary punishment, which have stoked rumors that he would retire.
Before, Lamichhane was a popular cricket player in Nepal and around the world because of franchise leagues, but subsequent scandals and a drop in play have tarnished his reputation. These issues have surpassed his previous fan base and triumphs.
Although Lamichhane has also changed his phone number for private reasons, he assured his fans that his WhatsApp account would remain active for the foreseeable future. This action reflects his ongoing difficulties amid the current controversies.
Fans have expressed mixed opinions about the suspension. While some support Lamichhane’s frustration with umpiring decisions, others emphasize the need for greater discipline and professionalism from the cricketer.
Lamichhane’s suspension has added another layer of complexity to his career, highlighting the challenges athletes face when their actions both on and off the field come under public and institutional scrutiny.
