KATHMANDU: A hearing is set for Wednesday at the Supreme Court regarding the petition to annul the letter from the Attorney General’s Office, which stated that there were no complaints or prosecutions against Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane concerning cooperative fraud. Supreme Court joint spokesperson Govinda Ghimire confirmed the scheduling following the petition's registration.
On May 6, the Attorney General’s Office issued a letter asserting that no complaints or allegations of embezzlement related to cooperative funds had been found against Minister Lamichhane in investigations conducted in Rupandehi, Kaski, and Chitwan. The letter indicated that there was no evidence of any investigation or prosecution against Lamichhane.
Advocate Anupam Bhattarai filed a petition challenging this letter at the Supreme Court. After the Chief Registrar of the Court dismissed his initial petition, Bhattarai filed another petition against this dismissal. He seeks an interim order to suspend Home Minister Lamichhane from his post until the cooperative fraud investigation is complete. Last Wednesday, Supreme Court Justice Tek Prasad Dhungana ordered the registration of Bhattarai’s petition, which questions the validity of the Attorney General’s letter and names Home Minister Lamichhane and Attorney General Dinmani Pokharel as defendants.
