Over 50% voter turnout by 2 PM in by-election

KATHMANDU: The local-level by-election saw over 50 percent voter turnout by 2 pm, just seven hours after voting began at 7 am on Sunday. Election Commission (EC) Spokesperson Nita Pokhrel highlighted the enthusiastic participation of voters and reported that the voting process was proceeding peacefully in all locations.


The EC estimates that overall voter turnout could surpass 60 percent by the end of the day, reflecting a steady and robust voting pace. A total of 226,799 registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots in this election.


The by-election is being held to fill 41 positions, including municipal mayors, deputy mayors, village council chiefs, deputy chiefs, and ward chairs. A competitive field of 376 candidates is vying for these roles, showcasing a diverse range of participants.


To facilitate the voting process, authorities have set up 162 polling stations and 293 polling centers across the constituencies. The EC’s smooth conduct of the election reflects its preparedness and the public’s commitment to democratic participation.
