KATHMANDU: A few weeks ago in Bharatpur Metropolitan City, Chitwan, a police officer brutally kicked and beat a young man. The video, which was taken on the bypass road, has since gone viral on social media and received a lot of backlash.

A police officer can be seen brutally kicking someone repeatedly in the footage. The policeman keeps hitting the pedestrian even after he has already fallen to the ground after the initial kick to his back. Outrage and grave worries about police wrongdoing and public safety have been aroused by the incident.

Journalist Narayan Amrit shared the video on X (formerly Twitter), calling for an investigation. “This incident of police brutality witnessed at midnight should be investigated. This scene on the sidewalk makes the general public feel unsafe due to the police themselves. What happened, a response is required,” Amrit wrote.

The circumstances leading to the attack remain unclear, but the video suggests the young man may have angered the policeman by "showing power" and making a phone call. The footage also shows the police conducting a motorcycle check in the area late at night.

Nepal Police Spokesperson DIG Dinesh Kumar Acharya confirmed that the incident occurred 15–20 days ago. He stated that the Police Headquarters had directed the Chitwan police to investigate the matter thoroughly. An investigation committee has been formed to uncover the facts behind the viral video.

Under the direction of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gyan Kumar Mahato, the Chitwan District Police Office has opened an investigation. DIG Acharya stressed that the behavior captured on camera violated the police code of conduct and committed to hold those responsible accountable.

DIG Acharya reaffirmed that the goal of the inquiry is to guarantee responsibility. "The footage violates the police code of conduct." He informed 'Republica' that "an investigation would be conducted and the guilty will be punished."

The date of the incident has been disclosed as December 29 or 30. Demands for justice and responsibility have been heightened by the viral film, which also emphasizes the necessity of tighter regulation of police conduct to protect public safety and trust.
