KATHMANDU: In his second term, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli placed the Department of Revenue Investigation (DoRI), the Department of Money Laundering Investigation (DoMLI), and the National Investigation Department under the Prime Minister's Office. He has expressed serious dissatisfaction with these agencies' performance. Oli chastised these authorities for their ineffective work and failure to respond to public concerns. His displeasure stems from allegations that DoRI and DoMLI employees have been interfering with traders' transactions and causing problems for them, as well as the NID's neglect to gather data on the growth in illegal activity and smuggling.
During a review meeting on August 25, PM Oli expressed frustration with the heads of these departments, stating that they had not performed effectively. He specifically criticized the National Investigation Department for its ineffective handling of intelligence and counterintelligence operations and questioned its utility if it cannot perform its mandated functions. Oli also expressed concerns about the handling of intelligence operations, alleging that the department has been used for political targeting rather than for national security purposes.
Oli also criticizes the DoMLI, claiming that it intimidates and fabricates reports to harass employees and business owners. He mentioned that the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority and the Prime Minister's Office have been notified about this matter. The Prime Minister's displeasure is indicative of larger worries regarding the efficiency of several government departments in addressing problems including state asset misuse, corruption, and smuggling.
Oli reiterated his disappointment with the performance of these agencies, emphasizing that their roles should extend beyond mere attendance and routine tasks. He warned that the state cannot afford ineffective institutions and demanded immediate results to prevent further damage to the country. His remarks underline the need for these agencies to fulfill their responsibilities effectively and restore public trust.
