KATHMANDU: The Lower Arun Hydroelectricity Project, a 669-MW initiative located in the Sankhuwasabha district of Koshi Province, will directly impact 268 families. According to the draft report on resettlement and rehabilitation by the project developer, Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam, around 65 hectares of local land will be acquired, with an additional 70 hectares of forest and six hectares of public land also affected.
The initiative intends to pay out about Rs 1.40 billion in compensation to the impacted residents. After the project was confirmed, the local community was consulted by the Indian hydroelectric corporation Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam.
Arun-III hydro project's tailrace development is how the Lower Arun Project, which will not have a reservoir or dam, is planned. For the Lower Arun project, this implies that the water will exit through Arun-III and then re-enter the river.
To facilitate the project, a 17.4-kilometer tunnel will be constructed at Chewabesi in Khandbari Municipality-2. In addition to Lower Arun, Satluj is also developing the 900-MW Arun-III Project.
