Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza remains deadlocked over cease-fire negotiation

KATHMANDU: The conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza persists, with both sides deadlocked on how to end nearly seven months of fighting. Hamas, represented by a delegation in Cairo, seeks a comprehensive cease-fire that includes the cessation of Israeli aggression, Israel's withdrawal from Gaza, and the release of Palestinian prisoners. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejects any deal that would leave Hamas in control of Gaza, fearing it would pose a continued threat to Israel's security.

Despite mediation efforts by Egypt and Qatar, no progress has been reported in the negotiations. Netanyahu remains firm in his stance against Hamas, expressing willingness for a cease-fire but emphasizing the need to prevent Hamas from maintaining power in Gaza. He has even threatened a ground offensive on Rafah, near the Gaza-Egyptian border, to eliminate Hamas battalions if necessary, regardless of a cease-fire agreement.

The United States, a key ally of Israel, has communicated its opposition to any new military action in Rafah. In Cairo, Palestinian officials indicate Hamas's willingness to negotiate but stress that a deal must be reached on terms acceptable to them. As talks continue, the situation remains tense, with no immediate resolution in sight.
