KATHMANDU: In relation to the theft of money from Pokhara's Surya Darshan Cooperative, Rabi Lamichhane, the former Home Minister and chairperson of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), was freed on bail on Thursday. He was given to his family upon his release.
Due to a related issue concerning the cooperative, Lamichhane is scheduled to appear at the Kathmandu District Court on Friday, according to RSP Acting Spokesperson Manish Jha. In Kathmandu, his court case will go on.
After being released, Lamichhane was examined by a physician at Fishtail Hospital in Pokhara. Prior to his official transfer to his family, this formality was finished.
After Lamichhane posted bail of Rs 6.5 million, the Kaski District Court approved his release from police custody. Similar conditions were attached to the bail granted to six additional co-defendants in the case.
Chhabilal Joshi, Leela Pachai, Ram Bahadur Khanal, Krishna Bahadur Gurung, and Aarti Gurung were among the accused who were freed after posting their corresponding bail sums. Their release was confirmed by Kaski District Court Shrestedar Rajan Khanal.
According to court documents, Leela Pachai, one of the defendants, was unable to post the minimum bail amount on Thursday, thus she was still being held.
The Kaski District Court held hearings behind closed doors for ten days before deciding to grant Lamichhane and his co-defendants bail. There were lengthy discussions and evidence reviews during the court's deliberations.
A total of 63 people have been charged by the Attorney General's Office in relation to the Surya Darshan Cooperative fraud. These court cases demonstrate the breadth of the alleged financial embezzlement and the case's further ramifications.
