Nepal and China sign 9 MOUs to boost bilateral ties

KATHMANDU: During Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's formal visit to China, nine memorandums of understanding (MOUs), agreements, and communications were signed between China and Nepal. These documents were concluded after Chinese Premier Li Qiangand Prime Minister Oli met at the Great Hall of the People.


The agreements covered a wide range of collaboration and were a major step in improving Nepal-China relations, according to Krishna Prasad Dhakal, the joint secretary and spokesperson for Nepal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


Such agreements included a development planning memorandum of understanding concerning infrastructural facilities, a communication exchange for the Tokha-Chhahare tunnel route, and initiatives to bring forth development and connectivity for Nepal.


The arrangements also included a 'rehabilitation' certificate for the historic nine-storey Basantapur Durbar, proving continuous Chinese commitment toward the reconstruction of the cultural infrastructure of Nepal.


The two countries also signed a protocol for exporting thermally processed buffalo meat, which may open up new markets for Nepalese agricultural exports to China. Additionally, a letter exchange was used to formalize a cash award arrangement.

The signing of a memorandum of understanding on volunteer Chinese language training in the field of education shows how both nations want to improve their linguistic and cultural ties.


Additional expressions of cooperation progressed through a memorandum of understanding between China Media Group and Nepal Television with regard to media and communication technology, thus signaling further cooperation in the broadcasting sector. 


Commercial trade, travel, agriculture, sports, medical cooperation and disaster management, research and technology, poverty alleviation, industrial growth as well as connectivity and people-to-people connections were included among those many areas of mutual interests covered by the two parties.


Dhakal underlined the importance of these accords, saying that they should significantly enhance Nepal-China relations by fostering mutual development and bolstering cooperation in a number of fields.


The visit showed Nepal's and China's shared commitment to deepening their bilateral partnership, with both sides expressing hope that these agreements will positively impact their economic and social advancement.
