KATHMANDU: Former Speaker Daman Nath Dhungana's death rites were performed with state honors on Monday afternoon at Pashupati Aryaghat. Dhungana, who died at the age of 83 on Sunday, was cremated in front of family, dignitaries, and officials.
During the cremation, Dhungana’s sons, Nimesh and Nishesh, lit the funeral pyre, accompanied by a ceremonial salute and mournful music played by the Nepali Army. The state honored Dhungana for his contributions to the country.
Dhungana died at 1:30 PM on Sunday while receiving treatment at Frontline Hospital in Baneshwar. His body was kept at Sanogaucharan for final respects, where Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli draped his mortal remains with the national flag as a tribute.
Former President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Janata Samajbadi Party Chairman Upendra Yadav, and Unified Socialist Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal, attended the funeral to pay their respects to the late leader.
In honor of Dhungana’s legacy, the council of ministers declared a nationwide public holiday on Monday to observe a day of mourning for the former speaker.
