KATHMANDU: This morning at 6:50 AM, a strong earthquake of magnitude 7.0 woke up people in Nepal and caused widespread concern. The epicenter was located in Dinggye County, Tibet, China, and the earthquakes were powerful enough to force residents of Kathmandu and other regions of Nepal to evacuate their houses.
The magnitude of the earthquake reminded people of the deadly Gorkha earthquake on April 25, 2015 (Baisakh 12, 2072 BS), which had a magnitude of 7.6. The eastern hilly districts of Solukhumbu, Okhaldhunga, Khotang, Sankhuwasabha, and Bhojpur were especially affected by the tremors. The earthquake was even reported in several areas of the Tarai region.
Solukhumbu, which shares a border with Tibet, reported significant shaking. However, despite the intensity and noticeable duration of the earthquake, no immediate damage was observed in the district headquarters’ marketplace, according to local sources.
In order to ascertain whether infrastructure or communities have been harmed, authorities have started evaluating the earthquake's overall effects. Investigations into the extent of any damage are ongoing, and as evaluations go, more details are anticipated.
Nepal's susceptibility to earthquakes was brought home by the shocks, raising questions about readiness and the urgency of taking immediate action. As the situation develops, updates from the impacted areas are anticipated.
