Members of the Irish-language rap group "Kneecap" have been prohibited from entering Hungary by the government, which will prevent them from performing at the Sziget Festival on August 11. The three-year ban will be in effect.
According to Hungary’s immigration authority, the band’s presence poses a serious threat to national security. The Belfast-based trio — Naoise Ó Cairealláin, J.J. Ó Dochartaigh, and Liam Óg ÓhAnnaidh — is known for politically charged performances, satirical lyrics, and support for the Irish republican movement. They have also openly expressed solidarity with Palestine during the Israel-Gaza war.
Hungarian officials cited alleged antisemitic speech and praise for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah as reasons for the ban. In response, Kneecap denied supporting any militant groups or promoting violence, saying they condemn all attacks on civilians.
The group has faced controversy before, including criticism at Britain’s Glastonbury Festival. One member, Mo Chara, was recently charged in the UK for allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag, which he denies.
Despite government pressure, Sziget Festival organizers had initially resisted removing the group from the lineup, stating that the event promotes tolerance and rejects all forms of hate.
