Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said he is open to scrutiny and ready to face any consequences if his public statements are proven wrong. Speaking at a book launch event in Baluwatar on Sunday, Oli stated, “If anything I’ve said is incorrect, I’m ready to take full responsibility.”
He stressed that the government should not be seen as a ruler, but rather as a manager and servant of the people. “Good governance and development are the government’s duty,” he said. “A responsible government ought to be answerable and duty-driven".
Addressing his critics, Oli added, “Those who are angry are free to criticize or insult me. I challenge you with facts. Everything I’ve said can be verified—even on the currency notes.”
Oli also made strong remarks against former King Gyanendra Shah, calling him a “puppet king” who took the throne after the 2001 royal massacre. He claimed that the real monarchy ended with King Birendra and Crown Prince Dipendra, and said Gyanendra was installed by political forces to weaken democracy.
He criticized the anti-corruption body, the CIAA, for targeting certain politicians during Gyanendra’s rule and said past kings and leaders contributed to Nepal’s political troubles.
Talking about his own political journey, Oli recalled his first election in 1991. According to him, his party only spent Rs 21,000 of the Rs 43,000 it raised. He even shared that he used Rs 200 given by Madan Bhandari, and saved Rs 20 to later buy tea with friends.
He said he won two general elections fairly, without using money, threats, or power. “If anyone can prove otherwise, I’m ready to face it,” Oli said. “Fair elections are possible if you stay honest.”
