KATHMANDU: Leading officials from the Gulf Coordination Council and Nepali missions in Oman held talks with Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba on Tuesday. Deuba is in Oman for the 8th Indian Ocean Conference and bilateral engagements. The topics of discussion included ways to improve Nepal's employment market abroad, economic diplomacy, and the challenges faced by Nepali migrant workers.
A senior officials' meeting, including the ambassador, acting consul general, deputy chief of mission, labor counselor, and labor attaché, was held at the Nepali Embassy in Oman. The attendees discussed critical areas of concern, namely, insurance and compensation, rescue, repatriation, and the management and disposal of the remains of deceased employees.
Trade, investment, tourism, and the promotion of job creation were deliberated upon with a blessing on cultural and economic diplomacy. Authorities looked into different means of putting Nepal on the world map through cross-cultural interactions and bolstering international relations.
Very importantly noted was the need for bridging interpersonal relationships to effectively interface with Nepali communities abroad. The meeting recommended mission officials to fully utilize resources at Nepal's diplomatic missions and improve their coordination with social organizations.
Minister Rana reaffirmed the government's commitment to enhancing the safety, organization, and respectability of foreign work. She underlined how crucial diplomatic missions are to protecting the rights and well-being of Nepali workers.
Hence, she ordered mission officials to be aggressive in tackling labor issues to make foreign employment much more attractive and beneficial to Nepali workers, whom she said will need to dismantle long obstacles to the employment of foreign workers.
This was emphasized by Rana, who also mandated not to make any mission-related function-economical, transparent, or high-tech processes without including work verification, as an indication of significance accorded to service delivery. The government's drive toward digital governance maximized efficiency, as he stressed.
She asserted that Nepal’s foreign missions should actively lead efforts in economic diplomacy to support the country’s broader development goals. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she assured, is determined to eliminate obstacles that hinder Nepal’s diplomatic and economic progress.
Following the official meetings, Minister Rana met with representatives of various Nepali community organizations in Oman, as well as embassy leaders and volunteers. She learned about their expectations and difficulties from this talk.
She urged Nepali migrant workers to preserve Nepal's image by carrying out their responsibilities with honesty and effort. She pointed out that their work improves the nation's economy and reputation abroad in addition to their personal development.
She informed the community that the government remains committed to implementing further policy, legal, and institutional reforms that will safeguard the welfare and rights of Nepali workers abroad. She acknowledged the delegates' concerns and pledged to find a diplomatic solution.
The minister highlighted that efforts are underway to enhance working conditions for Nepalis employed abroad. She mentioned that the government is in close contact with foreign authorities to create better employment policies and safeguard workers' rights.
Nepali Ambassador to Oman Dornath Aryal held a dinner for the Foreign Minister and her delegation to wrap up their meetings in Oman. Additionally, the occasion provided a forum for strengthening community and diplomatic relations.
Rana thanked the community organizations and embassy personnel for their dedication to advancing Nepali interests overseas during her visit. She urged them to keep up their diligent and effective efforts.
Minister Rana is expected to return to Nepal on Wednesday after her discussions and contacts were completed successfully. She will offer important insights and suggestions for enhancing Nepal's diplomatic outreach and global job market.
