KATHMANDU: The government has extended broadband internet service to the centers of all local levels across Nepal. This development was announced by Finance Minister Barsha Man Pun during the presentation of the economic survey for the fiscal year 2080/81 BS in the House of Representatives on Sunday.
As a result of this initiative, the centers of 5,951 wards now have broadband internet access. Additionally, 4,272 health centers and 5,341 community secondary schools have also been connected to broadband internet. This expansion has facilitated uniformity in the website formats of all local levels, with 63 bodies associated with 263 local levels having launched their websites. Furthermore, 838 virtual machines are operational for IT system usage in 340 government agencies through cloud services.
Minister Pun also shared statistics on the media landscape, noting that by the end of Falgun 2080 BS, there were 765 daily newspapers, 39 biweekly newspapers, and 298 weekly newspapers registered. Overall, 7,997 newspapers have been registered, with the majority being in Nepali (5,376 newspapers) and only two in the Rai language. Additionally, 720 FM radio stations and 107 television channels are currently in regular operation.
