Saudi Arabia’s ‘Sleeping Prince’ Passes Away After 20 Years in Coma

Prince Alwaleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, widely known as Saudi Arabia’s “Sleeping Prince,” has passed away at the age of 36, after spending nearly two decades in a coma. A sad and heartbreaking chapter in the Saudi royal family's history came to an end on Saturday, July 19, when his death was officially confirmed.

Who Was the Sleeping Prince?

Prince Alwaleed bin Khaled was the son of Prince Khaled bin Talal and a member of the influential Al Saud royal family. He fell into a coma in 2005 after suffering a traumatic brain injury in a car accident while studying in London. The accident caused a brain hemorrhage and severe internal bleeding.

He was immediately flown to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh and placed on life support. Prince Alwaleed never fully recovered, even with the help of foreign medical experts his family brought in. Over the years, small physical movements—such as the flicker of a finger or the raising of a hand—offered occasional hope, but his condition remained unchanged.

A Father's Unwavering Hope

Prince Alwaleed's father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, became well-known for his unwavering commitment to his son's education. He often shared videos of his son showing small signs of movement. He remained hopeful for his recovery. According to Prince Khaled, he prayed for a miracle and believed in Allah's will.  Because of this, many people found the "Sleeping Prince" narrative to be incredibly moving and inspirational.

The Global Imams Council expressed their condolences, praising the family's patience and faith. In a press release, the Council stated, "We recall with deep respect the patience and steadfastness demonstrated by his father... a testament to their profound faith in the will and decree of Allah."

Funeral prayers for Prince Alwaleed are scheduled for Sunday, July 20

For men After the Asr prayer at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh.

For women After the Dhuhr prayer at King Faisal Specialist Hospital

Many are expected to attend the funeral, including members of the royal family, religious leaders, and citizens who followed his story for years.
