At least 17 people have been killed and many others injured in two separate attacks in Colombia on Thursday.
In Cali, a car packed with explosives went off near a military aviation school, leaving five dead and over 30 wounded. The explosion also damaged nearby buildings. The city’s mayor announced martial law and called on residents to help with information.
On the same day, a police helicopter was brought down in Antioquia while carrying out operations to destroy coca crops, used in cocaine production. Authorities said the helicopter was struck by a drone, causing it to crash and kill 12 officers. Three others were injured.
President Gustavo Petro blamed FARC dissident groups for the violence, though officials also pointed to the Gulf Clan, a powerful drug cartel, as a possible suspect. One person linked to the attacks has been arrested.
Colombia has faced increasing violence in recent months as rebel groups and cartels fight for control of drug routes. Coca cultivation in the country hit a record high in 2023.
