Shi Yongxin, the 59-year-old abbot of Shaolin Temple in China, is under criminal investigation for potential embezzlement and misappropriation of funds, misuse of funds from the temple, and for possibly violating Buddhist vows. Shi has been called the monk "CEO", and was removed from his position when various government agencies began investigating him.
As a result, Shi’s ordination certificate has been revoked.
Shi became a monk in 1981 and rose to become the abbot of Shaolin in 1999. During his leadership, he transformed the 1,500-year-old monastery in Henan province into a global brand, launching businesses in martial arts, publishing, traditional medicine, and tourism. The temple even hosted international kung fu events and launched an online store.
Despite earlier accusations in 2015, Shi was cleared back then. However, the current investigation seems more serious. Religious authorities are openly condemning his actions for harming the reputation of Buddhism.
Shi has not commented publicly, and attempts to reach the temple have gone unanswered.
On Chinese social media, this situation has sparked discussion. Users have shown disgust and mocked the irony of a monk living in luxury while promoting simplicity.
