The visiting center at Evin Prison saw its cupboards, walls, and ceilings collapse into jagged rubble. The administration wing was filled with wires and wreckage, strewn with colorful case files and scorched documents. Broken glass filled the infirmary, causing damage to the beds and equipment.
Evin Prison in Tehran is infamous both inside and outside Iran, symbolizing decades of state repression. Since the time of the shah, and continuing under the clerics, it has been used to detain, interrogate, torture, and execute political dissenters.
On June 23, Israel launched a missile strike on the prison, triggering widespread outrage in Iran—even among those who oppose the government—because of the symbolic weight and human toll of the attack.
