KATHMANDU: For the previous two days, three of Nepal Airlines Corporation's (NAC) four planes have been grounded, causing disruptions to international flights. The narrow-body aircraft "Sagarmatha" experienced hydraulic problems, which resulted in a grounding that impacted flights to Kathmandu, Hong Kong, Doha, and Dubai. There were about eight hundred affected passengers since flights were canceled and travelers were billeted in hotels while they made new travel arrangements with other airlines.
The airline has made the required arrangements and scheduled replacement flights to guarantee that travelers reach their destinations, NAC Spokesperson Ramesh Poudel stated. Due to the cancellations and the expenses of handling the impacted passengers, the airline suffered a loss of Rs 10 million.
At present, NAC operates two narrow-body and two wide-body aircraft; however, one wide-body aircraft is slated to return by the end of August after undergoing substantial maintenance in Italy. For maintenance, a second wide-body aircraft has also been dispatched. Furthermore, the second of NAC's two "Twin Otter" aircraft, which are used for domestic flights, is grounded owing to technical problems, leaving just one in service.
Although there have been inconveniences from aircraft groundings in the past, Poudel pointed out that NAC's small fleet has made the effects worse. For the airline, the lack of available aircraft has resulted in serious operational difficulties.
