KATHMANDU: Marcus Ceslar, a 63-year-old Swiss traveler, is thought to have died in Manang, Nepal, from altitude sickness. Police inspector Rajendra Bahadur KC of the Manang District Police Office verified the identity.

Ceslar had decided to camp out at Yakkharka in Ngisyang-3 on Friday night. The next morning, he was discovered dead, raising questions about his health because of the high altitude.

After a security guard reported the fatality, which was most likely caused by altitude sickness, the police learned about the tragedy late in the afternoon.

Arrangements were on to have Ceslar's body flown to Kathmandu at the time of reporting.

Along with the Swiss tourist's death, authorities said they rescued 23 Nepalis and 10 foreigners from the area on Saturday.

In high-altitude areas like Manang, where hazards can be substantial without adequate acclimatization, the tragedy serves as a reminder of the risks that trekkers and visitors face from altitude sickness.
