KATHMANDU: Mayor Balendra Shah of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has addressed the ongoing protests against the expansion of footpaths in the New Road area. In a social media post, he expressed frustration with individuals advocating for vehicle parking on the road rather than prioritizing footpath expansion.
Mayor Shah argued that dedicating more than three feet of footpath for parking does not impede road width for driving. Conversely, he emphasized the necessity of clear footpaths for pedestrian safety and urban development. He urged the Department of Roads to reassess their road standards, particularly for areas with significant daily and seasonal traffic.
Highlighting the importance of adhering to established standards, Shah underscored that the footpath expansion was implemented to meet these criteria. He cautioned against hindering development progress and urged accountability for those obstructing it.
In conclusion, Mayor Shah called for unity in fostering the commercial and aesthetic enhancement of New Road amid changing urban dynamics. He urged stakeholders to collaborate towards achieving these goals rather than impeding progress for personal gain.
