KATHMANDU: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has taken legal action against eight individuals, alleging corruption in road construction overseen by the Consumer Committee. On Friday, authorities filed a case in the Special Court, targeting former chief administrative officer of Soru Rural Municipality, Birendra Malla, engineer Prakash Acharya, and six others.
The accused include assistant sub-engineer Bikram Budha, Consumer Committee chairman Hasta Bahadur Bumi, treasurer Dhauli Kami, and secretary Kewal Budha. Additionally, Dalbir Sarki, a Soru Rural Municipality member, and Rajendra Bumi, former Ward Chairman of Soru-7, are also implicated.
The CIAA's investigation revealed alleged irregularities in road construction activities, such as bid collusion, payment based on fabricated reports, and misrepresentation of the road's width. Furthermore, it is claimed that payments were processed using falsified documents, and the work was not completed as per the contract terms.
The CIAA is pursuing legal action seeking a fine of Rs 1,372,000 from each accused individual, as well as imprisonment and compensation. This case highlights the authorities' commitment to combatting corruption and holding individuals accountable for their actions in public projects.
