KATHMANDU: Following a court ruling pertaining to a murder conviction, former Provincial Minister Deepak Manange was moved to Dillibazar Jail. In order for Manange to complete the balance of his sentence, the Kathmandu District Court ordered that he be held at the facility.
Manange was first detained by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CIB) after being captured Tuesday morning in the Sanbharyang neighborhood of Kathmandu. Following this arrest and the Supreme Court's recent ruling to uphold his five-year prison sentence—which was first given by the Patan High Court—he was sent to Dillibazar Jail.
Thus far, Manange has completed two years and eight months of his five-year sentence. As the court has directed, he will now serve out the remainder of his prison sentence.
Manange's gang and another gang, commanded by Chakre Milan, got into a violent altercation in 2061 BS, which is when the case began. Legal action was taken against Manange after the incident turned into a fatal attack.
In 2069 BS, he was sentenced to five years in prison by the Patan Appellate Court for his role in the attack. However, once Manange appealed the conviction to the Supreme Court, there was a brief period of legal uncertainty.
The Supreme Court gave Manange bail so he could defend the case outside of jail while his appeal was still ongoing. He even held the position of provincial minister in Gandaki Province for several periods throughout this period.
The Patan High Court's original five-year prison term was upheld by the Supreme Court, which recently denied his appeal. He was eventually re-arrested and taken to jail as a result of this choice.
Even though Manange's criminal charges are still pending, his high-profile status and political roles in Gandaki Province have brought attention to his case, underscoring persistent worries about public officials' legal accountability.
