KATHMANDU: Today marks the celebration of the 17th Republic Day, a significant occasion commemorating the establishment of the Republic of Nepal. The day holds historical significance, symbolizing the aspirations and movements of the Nepali people for transformative change. The main ceremony committee has organized a program at Sainik Manch, Tundikhel, where various events are scheduled to take place. All three levels of government are actively participating in Republic Day celebrations, organizing diverse programs across the country.

Republic Day, which marks the establishment of the Republic, is an annual observance deeply rooted in Nepal's history. This year, the festivities extend over three days, from May 28 to May 30, with events organized not only within Nepal but also in Nepali embassies worldwide. The significance of Republic Day traces back to the armed struggle led by the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) and the peaceful movement of seven political parties. On April 24, 2006, King Gyanendra Shah ceded his direct ruling power, paving the way for the restoration of parliament. Subsequently, on May 28, 2008, the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly, elected through a government-formed election, formally declared the establishment of the Republic during the Legislature-Parliament session.

Republic Day serves as a reminder of Nepal's journey towards democracy and governance by the people, reflecting the collective efforts and sacrifices made for political transformation. It stands as a testament to Nepal's commitment to democracy, sovereignty, and inclusive governance, fostering unity and progress across the nation.
