KATHMANDU: Chief Minister Yam Lal Kandel of Karnali Province is set to seek a vote of confidence today, following a shift in political support. Kandel has formally requested arrangements for the vote, in accordance with Rule 150 (1) of the Karnali Province Assembly Rules, 2079 BS, and Article 118 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal. This will be Kandel's second confidence vote during his tenure.
This vote is necessary because of developments in the central government that caused the CPN (Maoist Center) to rescind its endorsement of Kandel's administration. With the support of the Nepali Congress (NC), Kandel hopes to obtain a fresh mandate in order to carry on leading.
Thirteen members from the CPN (Maoist Center), ten represent the CPN-UML, one each from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, the CPN (Unified Socialist), and fourteen members represent the Nepali Congress make up the Karnali Provincial Assembly. It will be decided by the results of today's vote if Kandel can successfully reassemble his administration with a newfound majority.
