KATHMANDU: World Red Cross Day, observed on May 8 each year, is commemorated with various programs under the theme "keeping humanity alive". It serves to honor the humanitarian efforts and principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, highlighting their vital role in assisting people affected by natural disasters, armed conflicts, and other crises worldwide.
The day serves as a reminder of the legacy of Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement over 160 years ago. Despite modern challenges such as conflicts, violence, discrimination, and climate change-induced disasters, the importance of compassion, love, support, and treatment remains paramount, as reflected in this year's theme.
Secretary-General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Jagan Chapagain, emphasized the need for heightened humanitarian efforts to address the mounting challenges in preserving humanity. Upholding international humanitarian law not only preserves the humanity of those affected by crises but also maintains our own humanity for generations to come.
In Nepal, the Nepal Red Cross Society, established in 1963, plays an integral role in humanitarian assistance. With numerous sub-branches and youth circles across the country, along with a robust member base, the organization annually serves millions of people. IFRC's country representative for Nepal, Ajmat Ulla, reaffirmed the commitment to continue humanitarian support in the country, underscoring the ongoing efforts to uphold the principles of compassion and humanity.
