KATHMANDU: Parliament Day is being celebrated today with various programs to commemorate the first elected parliament, which convened for the first time on Asar 16, 2016 BS. This parliament was formed following the country's first general elections held in 2015 BS. The Federal Parliament Secretariat and the Ex-MPs Forum are organizing events to mark this significant establishment.
The inaugural parliament elected Nepali Congress leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai as Speaker on Asar 19, 2016, who served until Poush 1, 2017, when then-King Mahendra dissolved the elected parliament and imposed a partyless Panchayat system. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Devraj Ghimire, emphasized the importance of focusing the parliament on the country's and its people's needs, correcting procedural shortcomings, and strengthening the parliamentary system based on constitutional principles.
Despite Nepal's long parliamentary history, repeated political upheavals have hindered the continuous practice and strengthening of the parliamentary system. However, Speaker Ghimire expressed optimism that Parliament Day would promote parliamentary democracy and inspire efforts to make the parliament more dynamic and people-oriented.
