Nepal Bar Association protests against Judicial Council Regulations amendments

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Bar Association (NBA) staged a protest outside the Judicial Council Secretariat on Sunday to voice their disapproval of recent changes made to the "Regulations of the Judicial Council." A planned council meeting was preceded by the protest. The NBA claims that these revisions contravene the requirements of the Nepalese Constitution and are unconstitutional.

The suggestion process for selecting judges under the revised regulations is the primary complaint of the group. They want the first amendment to the regulations to be revoked because they claim the modifications threaten the judicial nomination process. There are now 50 open judge positions that have not yet been filled, including four at the Supreme Court.

Reports suggest that the ruling alliance is getting ready to proceed with proposals for filling these judicial seats in spite of the opposition. The NBA is still contesting the revisions and wants to make sure that the judge nomination procedure complies with the Constitution, so things are still tight.
