KATHMANDU: Two fast inspection teams have been formed by the Ministry of Finance (MoF) to deal with illicit trade and revenue leaks. The deputy director general of the Inland Revenue Department will oversee one team, which will concentrate on the eastern stretch of the East-West Highway, which runs from Chitwan to Mechi. The second team will cover the western portion of the highway from Chitwan to Mahakali, working under the direction of the deputy director general of the Department of Customs.
Concerns regarding the delayed revenue collection have led to this decision. The government only received 74.29% of the targeted revenue in the preceding year and in the fiscal years 2022–2023, respectively. Difficulties include smuggling over the open border with India, which has an impact on customs revenue, and makes up a substantial part of overall revenue.
As part of the MoF's 100-day work plan to enhance tax collection and prevent illicit transactions, the new inspection teams have been deployed. To successfully prevent smuggling and enforce rules, the teams will collaborate with pertinent government entities.
