KATHMANDU: Marie Stopes International Nepal and the Kathmandu Rotary Club organized a cervical cancer screening camp to promote early screening for the disease. A health camp sponsored by the Trishakti Yuwa Club was hosted at Gahana Pokhari in Kathmandu to provide the locals with access to basic medical services.
The event included gynecological examinations and cervical cancer screenings using the Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) test. These screenings were facilitated by Marie Stopes International's implementing partner, Sunaulo Pariwar Nepal. Along with gynecological care, Green City Hospital performed general health and renal examinations, while the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology offered eye exams.
It was inaugurated ceremonially by Pradeep Paudel, Minister for Health and Population, who laid stress on the government's commitment towards universal access to health care services. These programs, according to him, are very much about the prioritizing of serious health problems to allow for early detection.
Of the 90 women screened for cervical cancer in the camp, six were found to be positive. Further assessment and management were referred to Marie Stopes Centre Putalisadak and other specialized health institutions where they were also under psychotherapy.Â
One of the most important factors has been the cooperation of several groups in the country with regard to increasing access to healthcare services. A camp with various health examinations under one roof aimed at awareness about preventive care and serving the community was organized.
