KATHMANDU: The blood supply at the regional blood transfusion service center managed by the Nepal Red Cross Society in Dhangadhi is dwindling, posing challenges for patients in need. Dharanidhar Pant, the center's head, has expressed concerns that they are unable to meet immediate requests for blood if patients urgently require it. This shortage is particularly critical for patients coming from the hilly districts of Sudurpaschim Province who seek treatment in Dhangadhi and may require blood transfusions without delay.
Families of hospitalized patients are facing difficulties as they struggle to find donors amidst declining participation in blood donation programs in the district. Pant highlighted the dwindling number of fresh donors available from local communities, despite ongoing efforts to encourage blood donations. As a result, obtaining blood has become increasingly challenging and time-consuming.
The urgent requirement for sufficient blood reserves is highlighted by the fact that some patients who need surgery have already experienced delays due to scarcity. The center normally provides 50 to 60 units of blood every day, but the present circumstances have made it difficult for them to adequately satisfy demand. There is a continuous effort to tackle the scarcity of blood and enable patients in urgent need to receive it on time.
