KATHMANUD: Nepal Police has extradited Mohammad Siyam Hussain, a Bangladeshi citizen accused in the murder case of Bangladeshi MP Anwarul Azim Anar, to India. The transfer occurred on Monday following Hussain's apprehension by Nepal Police on Wednesday. While Bangladesh Police sought Hussain's extradition, he was sent to India due to his arrival from there.
Hussain's handover to Indian authorities was facilitated by Nepal's INTERPOL branch after discussions between the Special Bureau and INTERPOL regarding his deportation. However, Dhan Bahadur Karki, Nepal Police's spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General, claimed no knowledge of the case. Nonetheless, Nepal Police decided to send Hussain to India instead of Bangladesh due to concerns over potential legal repercussions, as Bangladesh's laws allow for the death penalty in such cases.
In light of these circumstances, Nepal Police emphasized that individuals involved in the incident would be prosecuted under Nepal's Penal Code, 1860. Given the informal cooperation between Nepal and India in crime control, it was deemed expedient to extradite Hussain to India, where Bangladeshi MP Anar was murdered in Kolkata.
Despite efforts by a team from Bangladesh's Detective Branch to deport Hussain, Nepal Police opted to send him to India. Hussain's alleged involvement in Anar's murder prompted his arrest, with Bangladeshi MP Anar found murdered in Kolkata on May 22, 2024. Further investigations suggest a complex web of relationships and motives surrounding the case, with ongoing efforts by multiple agencies to bring all suspects to justice.
