KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has announced a substantial profit exceeding Rs 11 billion in the initial nine months of the ongoing fiscal year 2080-81 BS (2024-25). This profit amounts to Rs 11 billion 60 million, reflecting the organization's robust financial performance during this period.
NEA's financial data, up until the month of Chait (mid-April), indicates a total revenue of Rs 93 billion 940 million, excluding tax. Concurrently, the organization's expenditures, encompassing electricity purchases, administrative costs, and project investments, stood at Rs 82 billion 880 million.
Comparatively, in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year, NEA registered a profit of Rs 8 billion 880 million, contributing to an annual profit of Rs 13 billion 370 million. The cumulative profit of NEA has now reached an impressive Rs 33 billion 64 million.
Notably, NEA has been consistently profitable since the fiscal year 2072-73 BS (2015-16), marking a significant turnaround from its prior annual loss of Rs 8 billion 890 million. This remarkable transformation is attributed to various factors, including stringent measures to control electricity leakage, augmented domestic consumption, increased exports to India, and prudent expenditure management.
With a net revenue of Rs 68 billion 890 million from power supplies, NEA has also successfully exported surplus electricity generated from domestic consumption to India, generating an additional revenue of Rs 13 billion 420 million during this period. These achievements underscore NEA's pivotal role in Nepal's energy sector and its growing prominence as a key contributor to the nation's economic development.
