KATHMANDU: The data provided by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development shows that Nepal has imported paddy and rice grains up to Rs 20 billion in the first 11 months of the fiscal year 2023/24. The country specifically imported more than 305,07 million kg of paddy for Rs 11. 55 billion, by mid-June.
During the same period, Nepal also imported 82.7 million kilograms of rice, totaling Rs 8.69 billion. Additionally, imports included paddy seeds valued at Rs 8.65 million and broken rice grains worth Rs 920,000, as per the statistical data provided.
These imports highlight Nepal's significant reliance on external sources to meet its domestic demand for staple foods like paddy and rice, reflecting ongoing challenges in achieving self-sufficiency in grain production.
