KATHMANDU: In the fiscal year 2080/81 BS, Ilam district saw the completion of 59 irrigation projects, with a total investment of Rs 348.7 million. These projects, developed under the Small Irrigation Programme, have benefitted over 2,100 households by enhancing irrigation facilities across the district.
The completed projects have significantly improved irrigation supplies for farmers, leading to increased satisfaction and reduced reliance on rainwater. Notable projects include ten in Suryodaya Municipality, nine in Ilam Municipality, eight in Mangsebung Rural Municipality, and seven in Mai Municipality, as reported by Keshav Lama, Chief of the Small Irrigation Programme.
For instance, in Gajurmukhi village within Mangsebung Rural Municipality, the new Pakrumba canal has alleviated dependence on rainwater, benefiting local farmers with an investment of approximately four million rupees. Similarly, in Lapsibote village in Maijogmai Rural Municipality, an irrigation project costing Rs 5 million has directly benefited 58 households.
These developments in irrigation were possible through a collaborative effort between the federal and provincial governments, local authorities, and the Swiss Government.
