KATHMANDU: The administration has been instructed by the parliamentary committee to expedite the prompt reopening of shuttered sugar facilities. The directive originated from the House of Representatives Industry, Commerce, Labor, and Consumer Interest Committee subcommittee, which stressed the necessity of creating an atmosphere that is conducive to the resuscitation of these firms.

The subcommittee, which had previously inspected sugar mills in various areas, suggested that the government solve the problems encountered by sugarcane growers. Their conclusions are based on field trips and interactions with stakeholders such as farmers, industry professionals, and government officials. The subcommittee's report recommended modifying the 'Operating Procedure on Subsidy for Sugarcane Farmers, 2075' BS and consulting with all relevant stakeholders.

Additionally, the committee instructed the Office of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers, along with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, to set the base rate for sugar considering farmers' costs and evaluate co-products of the sugar industry. They were also directed to determine the support price for sugarcane in the first quarter based on these evaluations.

It was also recommended that the government strengthen the National Sugarcane Research Program and the Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC) and coordinate better across federal agencies to guarantee sugarcane farmers receive seeds, fertilizers, and insecticides on time.
