KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has ruled in favor of allowing transgender individuals to choose their gender identity in official government documents. This decision permits people born as male or female to identify as either gender in documents such as citizenship certificates and educational records, according to their preference.
The ruling, delivered by a joint bench of Chief Justice Biswambar Prasad Shrestha and Judge Kumar Chudal on Kartik 20, 2080 BS, was recently published. It followed a writ petition filed by a transgender woman who sought legal recognition of her gender identity in all official records.
The court's order mandates the update of citizenship, educational, and other identity-related documents to reflect the individual's chosen gender. This landmark decision represents a significant step in recognizing and affirming gender identity rights in official documentation.
