KATHMANDU: A writ case challenging the Supreme Court Registrar's denial to acknowledge aviation safety as a public concern has been filed by attorney Anupam Bhattarai. The law is being changed in this petition to allow those who don't meet certain requirements to hold the position of Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN). A hearing has been scheduled in response to another writ that challenges the same ruling, and a bench has been established to consider this case.
Bhattarai is requesting the annulment of a decision made on August 5, 2024, arguing that it contradicts existing laws, as well as international rules and regulations, particularly concerning aviation safety. He believes the decision is intended to downplay the significance of aviation accidents and has requested that it not be implemented.
In his petition, Bhattarai also asked the court to involve aviation safety experts as amici curiae to provide critical insights into the issue. However, this request was rejected by the Supreme Court Registrar, leading to the formation of a bench to review the case. Another related petition is set to be heard today.
