KATHMANDU: Despite having received prior weather forecasts warning of such catastrophes, Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' has openly criticized the government for its insufficient response to the recent floods and landslides.
A major weakness in the government's disaster response was brought to light by Dahal, who pointed out that the state apparatus did not move quickly to conduct rescue operations during the most recent natural disasters.
In the federal capital, in particular, he demanded a comprehensive probe into the shortcomings that prevented immediate rescue efforts, stressing that such circumstances must not happen again.
Dahal encouraged the government to take a more coordinated approach to disaster management after reading a report created by the Maoist Center's Natural Disaster and Disaster Management Department. The study was created by a team of experts after on-site examinations of impacted districts.
Dahal specifically blasted the administration for failing to protect the populace during the floods that happened on Friday and Saturday, citing a dearth of efficient post-event aid and rehabilitation initiatives.
The speaker underscored the necessity for the government to enhance the effectiveness of its diverse procedures in managing natural disasters, stressing the significance of prompt and efficient intervention.
Dahal said that geological assessments should be carried out before any infrastructure projects or settlement growth because unplanned settlements greatly increase the risk of landslides and floods in both urban and hilly areas.
He restated his long-standing support for systematic infrastructure planning and settlement development, which he has done since his first tenure as prime minister.
Infrastructure and settlements must be planned based on geological evaluations, Dahal emphasized, in order to successfully reduce risks from natural disasters like floods, landslides, and earthquakes.
He said that future efforts to enhance disaster response and preparedness will greatly benefit from the report produced by the specialists working under the party's disaster management department.
Dahal also declared that he will soon submit a memorandum to the government with the goal of advancing scientific advancement and putting improved disaster management plans into action.
The Maoist Center's head disaster management officer, Surya Subedi Pathik, disclosed that the team of experts toured areas devastated by floods and landslides and produced a report outlining the main issues and possible solutions for future disaster management endeavors.
