KATHMANDU: Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing for talks with Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, highlighting the deepening strategic partnership between the two nations and their shared opposition to the United States' dominance. This visit, Putin's first foreign trip since his recent re-election, underscores the importance of China in Russia's foreign policy agenda and the strength of personal ties between the leaders.
The partnership between Russia and China, declared as "no limits" in February 2022, has been emphasized by Putin, who commended Xi for fostering a strong relationship based on mutual trust and national interests. Both leaders aim to enhance cooperation across various sectors, including industry, technology, space, and energy, reflecting their commitment to advancing bilateral ties.
During informal discussions over tea and dinner, Putin and Xi, along with senior officials, are expected to address key issues such as Ukraine, regional security in Asia, energy cooperation, and trade. The presence of top CEOs from Russia underscores the importance of economic cooperation between the two countries.
The visit coincides with the celebration of 75 years since the Soviet Union recognized the People's Republic of China, underscoring the historical ties between the two nations. While some observers hail the partnership as "great power diplomacy," the visit also draws attention to the growing alignment between Russia and China amid strained relations with the West, particularly the United States. Despite Western concerns about their cooperation, China's significance as Russia's key ally has strengthened, particularly in the face of sanctions imposed by the West.
