KATHMANDU: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is undertaking the construction of high-capacity transmission lines and substations in the Bara-Parsa industrial corridor of Birgunj. These projects aim to enhance the power supply infrastructure for industries operating in the region, including Birgunj, and are nearing completion or undergoing construction, as per NEA reports.
In efforts to address the electricity demands of the Birgunj Industrial Corridor, NEA is upgrading the 132 kV double-circuit transmission line from Pathlaiya to Parwanipur. By replacing the conductors with high-capacity (HTLS) ones, the transmission capacity is expected to nearly double, facilitating the smooth flow of electricity towards Parwanipur.
NEA Managing Director Kul Man Ghising has stressed the importance of completing the conductor replacement work promptly to mitigate power supply disruptions in the Birgunj area. The upgraded transmission line's enhanced capacity could potentially enable surplus electricity export to Raxaul, India, thereby contributing to regional energy stability.
Furthermore, NEA is focusing on constructing high-capacity transmission lines and substations to meet the growing industrial electricity demands in Birgunj. Projects include the construction of 132 kV substations in Parsauni and Birgunj, along with proposed transmission lines from Parwanipur to Pokhariya to address industrial electricity needs. Additionally, a 400 kV substation at Nijgadh, along with associated transmission lines, is being developed to enhance regional power infrastructure, supported by concessional loans from various sources. However, funding for the Ramauli-Pokhariya transmission line and substation construction remains pending.
