KATHMANDU: Relief payments in the amount of approximately Rs 68 million have been assigned by the Karnali Province Government to those impacted by natural disasters that happened between mid-April 2020 and early July 2024. This assistance is funded in part by the insurance money given to families who have lost loved ones in various natural disasters. 344 families have received a total of Rs 68.8 million in distributions.
Relief distribution was carried out in several phases. In the first phase, Rs 1.8 million was given to the families of 59 deceased individuals. The second phase saw Rs 940,000 provided to 47 families, each receiving Rs 200,000. The third phase involved Rs 13.2 million distributed among 66 families, while the fourth phase granted Rs 34.4 million to 172 families. These funds were provided through the National Insurance Company.
Natural disasters including earthquakes, floods, landslides, lightning, and flames took 171 lives from Shrawan to the end of Asar during the fiscal year 2023–2024. The deceased individuals' relatives were given a sum of Rs 34.2 million. Thirty million rupees was a large amount of money given to the families of those killed in the Jajarkot earthquake. Of that amount, two million rupees were paid to each family through insurance.
Three victims of the Jajarkot earthquake are still awaiting reimbursement, according to Krishna Bahadur Rokaya, the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law's (MoAIL) Disaster Management Branch. This stems from their continuous lack of documentation. Moreover, Rs 400,000 has been granted to the families of twenty people who died in accidents other than the earthquake. The reimbursements are covered by the Group Personal Accident Insurance policy, which is available to the 1.7 million residents of the province of Karnali.
